Boys Lacrosse gets first win of 2011

The boys lacrosse team moved to 1-1 with an out of conference win against the Upper Merion Vikings on a cold and windy afternoon at Upper Merion High School.

Methacton jumped out to a two goal lead in the first quarter with goals by Eli Miller and Clay Sobocinski but the Vikings rallied scoring two goals within the final minute and a half of the quarter.

Sobocinski opened the second quarter scoring on a goal in transition assisted by Scott Markle, then added a helper of his own on a Matt Brasher goal.  Upper Merion's Luc Minnich scored his second of the day before Cody Ridgway scored a strong individual effort in transition.  The Warriors continued their offensive pressure adding a goal a piece from Pete Alloway and Matt Brasher to bring the halftime score to 7-4.

Upper Merion came out in the second half determined to force the issue and was the first on the board in the third quarter with Trevor Kupecky scoring his first of three on the day.  However, Methacton responded with four unanswered goals to take a commanding 11-5 lead into the fourth quarter.

Methacton scored it's final goal of the day to start the fourth quarter as Sobocinski notched his fourth helper on Matt Brasher's fourth goal of the afternoon.  Upper Merion scored three goals late in fourth quarter action to bring the final tally to 12-8 in favor of the visiting Warriors.

Coach Ryan noted the teams' improved play saying "I thought we executed much better in all facets of the game.  Our offense finally started to click and I was happy to see assists on 9 of our 12 goals.  It was truly a team effort today but Clay Sobocinski, Scott Markle, and Matt Brasher really stood out.  Scott is so important in our transition game and Clay and Matt seemed to be working well together.  Our defense led by Scott [Markle] and Anthony [DeSana] continues to be stout in settled situations and if we can limit our transition I expect big things from this group."

Goalie Ryan Murphy recorded 12 saves on the day and Eli Miller continued his dominance at the faceoff X with a 15 for 22 outing.  Sobocinski led all point scorers with 3 goals and 4 assists followed by Brasher with 4 goals and an assist.

Methaction returns to action this Wednesday as they travel to Pottsgrove for their league opener and open their home schedule on Friday against league rival Owen J. Roberts.
