Defense Does It For Warriors

Fans love to see goals scored, but rarely do you hear praise for the guys keeping the numbers off the board.  The old cliche is that offense fills the stands, but defense wins championships. Methacton continued its strong defensive effort to hold the visiting Boyertown Bears to three goals on the day.

Matt McClay opened the scoring for the hosts on an individual effort and Matt Brasher added an unassisted tally to cap the first quarter scoring.

With a 2-0 lead going into the second quarter the visitors found the net twice to knot the score at two all.  Methacton close the first half scoring as Clay Sobocinski found a slashing Matt McClay for his second of the day to give Methacton a lead it would not relinquish.

Opening the second half with a 3-2 lead, the Warriors found the net first in the third quarter as Sobocinski found senior attackman Sean Aronow for his first of the day.  Sobocinski would add an unassisted goal but the visitors responded just over two minutes later to bring the score to 5-3.  However, Cody Ridgway managed to find Sobocinski alone on the back pipe to stretch the lead to four with just four seconds remaining in the quarter.

With a 6-3 lead in the fourth quarter the rest of the day would belong to the hosts as Sean Aronow scored two more goals (one on extra man offense) and Senior Sam McAdoo finished the scoring with an extra man goal.

Despite the strong offensive effort the day truly belonged to the defense.  Causing a number of turnovers, and winning the ground ball game, the defense led by seniors Scott Markle, Anthony DeSana, Ryan Murphy, and Alex Roese frustrated the Bears attack all day.   Coach Ryan said "I've been really impressed with the way our defense has played lately.  We've been able to really extend and pressure the ball without sacrificing our help defense.  Additionally, our short sticks [Kyle Rioboli, Will Johnson, and AJ Michael] have played outstanding individual defense which really allows us to step out and press with our poles.  As any coach will tell you, a defense is only as strong as its shortsticks and we feel pretty confident with our level of play there.:

Goalie Ryan Murphy made 5 saves Pete Alloway was 5-14 from the faceoff x.
