The road to the state tournament got extremely more treacherous for the Lady Warriors girls basketball team Wednesday night. One of the hottest teams on the planet – West Chester Rustin – threw up a roadblock that the Lady Warriors were unable to avoid, handing them a 54-49 loss in the second round of the District One Class AAAA girls’ basketball tournament.
The loss sends the # 5 seed Lady Warriors into the consolation bracket, where they must post two straight wins to advance to the PIAA tournament. Up next for the Lady Warriors is a road date Saturday (1:30 p.m.) with No. 4 Neshaminy, which was upset by No. 20 Pennsbury 48-41 Wednesday.
After Kara Steinke nailed both ends of a one-and-one to give Methacton a 47-46 lead with 2:13 remaining, the 12thseed had an immediate response. Anna Steinmetz scored on a hard drive to give Rustin the lead for good, and following an empty Warriors possession, Casey Warley stretched the lead to 51-47 by draining a long triple at the 1:24 mark.
The light was blinking yellow when Steinke converted an offensive rebound into a bucket at the other end to cut the gap to 51-49. But Rustin’s Katie O’Hare had another answer, knocking down a 16-footer from the left elbow for a four-point advantage with 42 seconds remaining.
At the other end, the Lady Warriors (21-6) failed to convert on a two-shot possession, and the game was officially over when Noelle Powell hit one of two free throws with 10 seconds left for the 5-point spread.
The Lady Warriors came out tight as a drum, missing their first nine shots from the floor and committing 5 quick turnovers in falling into an early 13-2 hole. To its credit, the Lady Warriors regained its footing and actually took a 22-20 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Sarah Sherman, who collected a team-high 14 points for the hosts, continued the upward trend with a 10-foot jumper just 10 seconds into the third quarter, but the Golden Knights responded with an 11-0 run to seize control. Kelsey Watson posted a double-double for the Warriors with 13 rebounds and 10 points, while Jenna Carroll chipped in with 9 points and 8 boards. But it wasn't quite enough to get the Lady Warriors to its destination.
